This is one of my first sample projects and has ended up being one of my favourites, as well as the most successful, to date.
During the initial sampling/recording process (winter 2021), I aimed to create an instrument that could playback my recorded double bass performances in a way that is impossible to do live (unless you have many double bassists with unconventionally tuned instruments). It was originally put together to create a unique, reverb-drenched soundscape for the sound design of a theatre piece that I was working on.
Loosely repeated bowed notes (arco, unmeasured tremolo) were performed very lightly on high harmonics and recorded in my home studio with a close mic (large diaphragm condenser) and a matched pair of stereo room mics (small diaphragm condenser). These recordings were then processed and pitch-shifted to give the various results heard in the original sample instrument.
These sounds then went on to become the basis for one of my first submissions to the amazing online community of samplists and composers called Pianobook, where the Kontakt (paid software from NI) & Decent Sampler (free, created by David Hilowitz) versions have been downloaded thousands of times from this page: https://www.pianobook.co.uk/packs/harmonic-flights/
The Pianobook version of Harmonic Flights has been used in many media composition projects (film, TV, games, library music) by many composers, as well as other music productions, and has been part of several of my own compositions/productions and songs. It’s popularity also helped lead to me being honoured with the distinction of Pianobook Samplist of the Year for 2021, as well as the Pianobook Featured Samplist for the month of February, 2022.
In the winter of 2022, I was approached by Christian Henson who is a successful media composer, YouTuber, and the cofounder of Spitfire Audio, a company who makes high quality (and highly inspiring!) sample libraries. He asked me if I would be interested in collaborating with the Spitfire LABS team to make a new version of Harmonic Flights for their platform and I jumped at the opportunity! I then began working with the excellent LABS team (Sally Stenning and Calum Minuti-Goold, in particular) to put together promo materials and some new warps/sounds for the LABS version of Harmonic Flights. The results look/sound phenomenal and can be downloaded for free, here: https://labs.spitfireaudio.com/harmonic-flights
I hope that all of you composers, music makers, and listeners enjoy this sample instrument as much as I do.
Have a nice flight!
